When you first visit the Palãcio do Freixo, you come off the busy roads of Porto and as you go along the long driveway you are suddenly somewhere so much more tranquil; then when you go into the building itself, there is a sort of reverential quiet with all the historic furniture and artwork on the wall giving that sort of refined atmosphere that puts everyone on their best behviour. The recent renovations (finished in 2009) really have preserved every element of the 18th century splendour and there is no hint of modernity inside (even the staff are traditionally dressed and suitably softly spoken…).

Generally if you hold your wedding between May and September you can expect some fabulous weather and the Palácio do Freixo gives you every opportunity to make use of the beautiful outdoor spaces that are available, with mature trees and formal gardens. Being perched right on the banks of the Douro river make for the perfect spot for drinks and socialising with plenty of space for guests to spread out and explore. The event spaces that are used for weddings are all on the ground floor, so it is easy to integrate the outside and inside, which is not always an option, particular with wedding venues nearer the city centre.
